I was excited to read Audrey's post with the next
Bramble Blooms prompt:
Add a floral applique to your centerpiece background.
She gave us lots of wonderfully detailed and encouraging information about making our own choices for our projects, and I was anxious to get started!
I already had a vague idea about what I'd be aiming for: a bowl holding curving stems with blossoms and leaves. I fiddled with the fabrics in my #1 stack and came up with some color choices that seem to be a good starting point. I'm quite comfortable with choosing colors and combining prints -- I've been a scrappy quilter for more than 20 years, and all that practice has given me good confidence. Again, my observation about my fabrics is that they are all very 'medium' and I will need to be mindful about contrast. I anticipate fabric tweaks when I really start working on shape placement.
As far as inspiration for designing shapes/motifs, my first thought was the exuberant style in Kim McLean's applique work. I took a spin through Pinterest and found plenty of ideas. Then I decided to browse through my very large library of Blackbird Designs books and found lots of inspiration there also. And now I'm overloaded -- so many ideas for casual stylized floral compositions!! The possibilities are endless, and the more I look, the more I like. I need to let everything simmer for a little while before I actually start cutting fabric. I'll get back to it after the weekend.
